About Sophocles Zoullas

Sophocles Zoullas is a Greek‑American industrialist, investor, and maritime executive whose career spans more than three decades at the forefront of global shipping, capital markets, and international maritime governance. He is the Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Shipping, a privately held maritime investment and operating platform with strategic interests across the tanker and dry bulk sectors. His work sits at the intersection of global trade, energy logistics, industrial modernization, and long‑term capital stewardship.

Over his career, Zoullas has acquired and sold more than 100 commercial vessels, commissioned over 40 newbuildings in Japan and China, and raised billions of dollars across public and private capital markets through IPOs, secondary offerings, private equity, and structured debt financings. He is widely regarded for his disciplined capital deployment, multi‑cycle judgment, and ability to build resilient operating platforms that compound value over time. His leadership philosophy emphasizes transparent governance, rigorous risk management, and long‑term capital stewardship. He has cultivated longstanding commercial relationships across Japan, China, Korea, Europe, and the United States — a global network that underpins both operational execution and strategic growth.

In 2005, Zoullas founded Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. and served as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer until 2015. Within eight months of its formation, he led the company through its initial public offering on Nasdaq, establishing one of the earliest and most successful U.S. shipping IPOs of the modern era. Under his leadership, Eagle Bulk expanded to a 45‑vessel fleet and became one of the world’s most significant owners of Supramax dry bulk vessels. In 2009, the company was included in Fortune Small Business’s ranking of the 100 Fastest‑Growing Small Public Companies in America.

At Eagle Bulk, Zoullas oversaw a substantial newbuilding and fleet‑expansion program while developing deep relationships across global shipbuilding, chartering, banking, and capital markets. He introduced one of the industry’s first fleet‑wide charter‑default insurance programs, reflecting his emphasis on disciplined risk management and institutional‑grade governance.
